Climate change, dividing Conservatives

Tim Montgomerie, editor of ConHome, has an interesting article on that site today, writing up some of his thoughts for Radio Four’s The Week in Westminster.

“I make the case that the issue of climate change has the potential to divide the Conservative Party in the same way that Europe has divided us in the past,” he writes.

On the question of whether it is possible to do anything to stop climate change, Tim Montgomerie says he largely dissents.

He argues that climate change, like the EU are “massive distractions from other bigger issues,” stating:

“Bjorn Lomborg and other economists have successfully argued that global commitments to lift trade barriers and tackle malnutrition would be better for the world’s poor than the focus on climate change.”

He concludes:

“We all want cleaner air and cleaner rivers. But should we sign up to Al Gore’s climate change agenda? At the Conservative Party’s peril.”

It is a pretty cogent warning from the Tory grass roots of the divisions that potentially exist over an issue that will not only not go away but will become more and more important over the next few years. Read it all here.

  1. Global Warming and Climate Change is the biggest environmental issue that we face these days. the long term effects of these environmental changes to a nations economy is quite damaging. there would be a shortage in food supply as well as on water supply too.
